Mercedes-Benz Announces New Line Of Electric Vehicles

Say “electric car” and most people will picture small luxury vehicles. Such cars are fine for those who don’t need much space, but for many families, an SUV or other large vehicle is a necessity. Eco-conscious and tech-savvy consumers have thus been limited by cost and practicality.

Mercedes-Benz has worked tirelessly to break through these limits, and its efforts are about to pay off. The company recently announced a line of 10 electric SUVs, compact cars, and sedans, all at prices comparable to those of traditional automobiles. Set to launch by 2025, these vehicles will open new possibilities for consumers who seek style, sustainability, and safety.

Charge Considerations

Traditionally, it has taken much longer to charge a battery than it does to fill a tank up with gas, making EV cars impractical except for those with short commutes. Anticipating this problem, Mercedes-Benz has adopted a new generation of fast-charging batteries for its upcoming vehicles. Its electric SUV, the EQ, will have a battery that will charge in only 5 minutes and that holds enough power for a 310-mile journey. Whereas traditional engines are located under the hood of a car, the battery on Mercedes-Benz’s new electric vehicles will be in the floor. This, combined with the lack of need for a transmission or air vents, gives the company wide latitude for new designs. In the short term, the changes in design and layout will likely be minimal, as consumers are wary of cars that look unfamiliar or confusing. Electric automobiles will still have consoles where the transmission once was, and they will still have something resembling a grille on the front to sport the company logo. EV technology also introduces new design constraints, notably requiring the wheels to be spaced as far apart as possible to protect the battery. Nonetheless, the potential for innovative new designs is greater than ever, and as consumers get used to the EQ and other electric vehicles, the range of styles will continue to increase.

Mercedes-Benz plans to combine the two technologies as soon as possible, giving passengers a safer and more comfortable ride with an even wider range of designs.
